5 Steps for Bringing Home a New Puppy

5 Steps for Bringing Home a New Puppy Grandville, MI

Interested in our puppies for adoption?

As an adoption center for puppies, we understand that bringing a puppy home takes a lot of preparation and patience.

To help you out, we’ve created this guide that outlines the 5 steps for bringing home a new puppy.

  1. Choose a Dog Breed

Keep in mind that not all dog breeds behave the same. For example, golden retriever puppies are energetic and will be able to keep up with your active lifestyle. This can be great if your family loves camping, hiking, or just generally spending time outdoors. On the other hand, a Bernese mountain dog will be gentle around small children. The type of purebred you choose will depend on your family and lifestyle.

If you live in an apartment, you’ll need to check the weight limits of your complex. Few apartments in the city allow dogs (and those that do often have weight limits). For this reason, you’ll need to do your research to determine how big certain breeds get once they reach adulthood.

  2. Puppy Proof Your Home

While getting a puppy is exciting, don’t overlook puppy proofing your home. Since puppies are naturally inquisitive, you’ll want to make sure you cover electrical outlets, hide trash cans, and keep anything toxic well out of reach.

  3. Choose a Veterinarian

All our purebred puppies have their shots and veterinarian checkups before we place them in loving homes. However, before getting your puppy, you’ll want to make sure you choose a reputable veterinarian that’s close to where you live. That way, you won’t have far to travel for routine checkups and emergency care.

  4. Contact an Adoption Center for Puppies

Before contacting an adoption center for puppies, research how they treat their animals. For example, our dog breeders and their families play with their puppies every day. Our puppies for sale come from reputable breeders who give them indoor/outdoor access 24 hours a day. Once their dogs reach age 5 or 6, they are retired and placed in loving homes. The reputation of the breeder will tell you all you need to know about the health of their puppies and dogs.

  5. Interact with the Puppies for Adoption

It’s a good idea to play with the puppies before you make a final decision. (As if you need a reason to play with adorable puppies!) Playing with the puppies can help you get a good idea of their temperament and how they interact with humans and other puppies. Even within the same litter you will see variations in temperament. The ideal pet will have a personality that is playful, yet sweet.

If you have small children, you won’t want to pick a puppy that plays rough. Likewise, a shy puppy will have a hard time adjusting to a busy household. To an extent, puppies choose their owners. Odds are that the puppy that licks your face and showers you with the most attention is the one that wants to go home with you.
